Hello everyone.
I wondered if anyone could help. Jake is 5 with right sided hemi, his upper limb is worse and more noticeable. He goes to a mainstream school and currently in his second year ( Year 1 )
My question is '' How do I know he is getting all the help he needs whilst at school ?''
Dont get me wrong , Jake loves school ! But recently questions have started to run through my mind of what its like for him whilst I am not there.
Jake has a physo, OT & speech therapist. They have all been into school and are currently running a 6 week block in school every Tuesday afternoon and will then return to me at home.
I suppose this is more around the teachers knowing Jake and what he needs. In his first year I held a meeting with this teachers, the headmaster & senco ( although she never turned up ) every term to ensure they were meeting his needs, to ensure they were aware of his home life that may effect school ie. in bed for half 6 therefore couldnt do his reading book. These went really well in the first year but seems this year they have fallen flat- It has crossed my mind whether last year they felt they needed to make an impression.
His teacher recently advised me that he is below average for his reading, writing & math skills- to be honest this didnt both me too much - personally I am just soo pleased he has progressed like he has done. She also said that he struggles with his attention - which the doctors have said could happen from day one.
I know Jake is a hand full and he looks no different to any other child but what I find is because he looks the same , people easily forget what support he needs!
I also wanted to know, what is a statement was ? and whether Jake should have 1 on 1 classroom assistance.? Whether an Action Plan should be in place for him? or somekind of documentation? Im not sure I have turned to the right place here... maybe I should contact my local council ?
Does anyone else have the same feeling or lack of support?
I would be very grateful for any input from anyone
Take Care
Love Lauren & Jake

Gosh, Lauren,
Have you read my post about help in reception? These are very similar posts.
I don't have any answers for you at all sorry, because I am floundering with the whole thing myself. But just wanted to let you know that I feel like the worst mum at the moment as if I'm letting Samuel down. But reading your post made me realise that its bound to be similar for all of us in this situation.
Nicola.

Hi Nicola
I've just read your post and I totally understand how you are feeling.
Please don't think for one minute, your a bad mum!
I've used to think that about myself but soon realised it was other
people that didn't understand!
I spoken to my local council today and they advised that the school
senco should have 'school action plus's' in place for children like
Samuel & jake. They mentioned its like an action plan- I'm going to chase
this with school tomorrow.
It might help to hold meetings like I do, every term I get everyone together
the likes of his physo, his teacher, head teacher, me and dad and have
a big discussion about everything. I'm going to get back onto school
tomorrow to arrange them for this year.
To be honest I'm always going on at his school, suprised they put up
with me most of the time but I find it works - as daft as it sounds!
I recently purchased the book off here ' guidance for teachers '
and give it to school, I think they found it really useful especially
His new teacher!
Keep smiling nicola, it is hard work - that's why they have us as parents!
You ever need to talk about anything, give me a shout.
Love from one great mum to another
